Mantilla Veil Q&A
By lisadowling
Welcome to this short interview article about how to find out more about the mantilla veil. I will be covering the origins of the mantilla veil, different types of mantilla veil and how to go about choosing one for your wedding. Hopefully when you have finished this article you will understand some of the history of the mantilla veil and how to choose one for your own big day.
Question: What is a mantilla veil?
A mantilla veil is a lace head covering that originated in Spain hundreds of years ago and was traditionally used for religious services. It became very popular in the 19th century thanks to Queen Isabel of Spain who encouraged high society ladies to wear them.
Question: What color is a mantilla veil?
Traditionally they were made of black Chantilly lace but nowadays you get them in colors such as white and ivory as they have become a popular choice of veil for weddings and first communions.
Question: What shape is a mantilla veil?
A traditional mantilla veil is circular but nowadays they can be square or triangular also.
Question: Are all mantilla veils made of Chantilly lace?
No. These days you can get them in tulle or chiffon with a lace border
Question: Can you get embellished mantilla veils?
Yes they can be embellished with Swarovski crystals or pearls if you wish.
Question: Are there different ways of wearing a mantilla veil?
Yes. They can be draped simply over the head so they lie flat or they can be worn with a peineta. This is a large decorative comb which stands on top of the head with the veil draped over it. This is the traditional way of wearing one.
Question: Are mantilla veils only used for traditional services?
No, you will sometimes see mantilla veils as part of a flamenco costume. Although these would not be white ones.
Question: How do you go about choosing a mantilla veil for a wedding?
Well for a start, if your gown is quite busy then you will want to opt for a simpler veil. You won’t want to choose an embellished one and it is probably a good idea to opt for a tulle material with a lace border rather than a full lace veil. Conversely, if your gown is simple then you can go for a bit more detail in the veil. You will also need to decide on the color and shape. The color of the veil will obviously be influenced by the color of your dress and you may want to opt for a circular or square mantilla if you want the option of a front tier – although single tiers are more traditional.
